Why We Need It and What To Do About It in 2021

Kath Carter is a force of nature. This year, she has decided to harness the power of connection and fellowship and draw inspiration she needs, but in typical Kath fashion, she is sharing her bounty with the world.

Kath asked me to be part of her “Table of Ten,” a group of people she selected to be part of her intentional effort in 2021 to add more positivity to the world. She gifted us each of the ten of us the option of choosing a charity we care about for her effort. All we had to do was share an inspirational story or quote and involve just one more person, and ask the same of them. The amazing part? Kath has generously offered to donate $1 for each day in 2021 that we can be part of this, and if at the end of the year, all ten of the charities achieve their goal, she will multiply her gift by 10. Wow.

And all we — you — me — each of us — have to do is share one positive thing. I have decided to use Medium as a way to accomplish this. We are not asking for donations of money — just donations of inspiration.

The charity I chose is called Dancing With Chicago Celebrities which raises money to fight breast cancer. It’s a charity that grew from an event Jill DeMarlo created 15 years ago and felt so good about what we accomplished that we just kept going. 15 years later we have raised and donated over $3 million to the innovative research and access to care and even more importantly, we have used the power of ballroom dancing to help people see that each and every one of us can always do more than we thought.

The other very special part of this charity is that it is because of Dancing With Chicago Celebrities that I met Kath. It seems fitting that a friend of mine connected me with Kath. I feel like this is full circle…. She said yes to a new initiative we put in place many years ago… an as a result of her involvement, our charity grew exponentially, because by agreeing to dance for a group of people she didn’t know, Kath raised tens of thousands of dollars and opened a whole new perspective on what was actually possible. So I am saying yes to Kath and the power of connection.

Little did I know that while the funds we raise are powerful, the bigger impact has come from the thousands of people who have been involved with our effort over the years. I have seen more generosity, more connection, more sharing and more self-belief through this effort than anything else I’ve ever been involved in.

So, it’s easy to do your part.

Please click on the comment button at the bottom of this section with an anecdote, a quote or a quick story that shares your passion for or actions related to charitable work — if you have a story relating to the fight against breast cancer please share that but please also feel free to focus on how small actions can lead to big change.

We’ll use this space as a combination scrapbook-connection point-living archive-inspirational space. I encourage you to come back here when you need a little inspiration.

And when we get to 365 days we’ll add $365 to the fight against breast cancer. And then I will also donate the same amount. Twice as much for no more effort. But remember, we have the chance to multiply Kath’s donation by 10. That means, if we reach our goal, with Kath’s donation, we will have generated $4,000 for this important charity. Seems pretty easy, and you get the benefit of a year of inspiration simply by being part of this.

Thank you for your generosity of spirit and of time, for your friendship, your connection and to our shared belief of a better world.

Please use the comment button to share your inspirational story, quote or anecdote along with your name and city.

THANK YOU! Here’s to a brighter more connected positive world in 2021.
